John F. Mahoney

A member of the National Teachers Hall of Fame, John F. Mahoney is a semi-celeb. He is also a math guru at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in the District of Columbia. For the past 34 years, Mahoney has been answering that all-important question that students ask, “Why do I need to know this stuff?” He likes red pens, dislikes brussels sprouts, and has a minor Planet (#20324) named after him. Mahoney was an editor for Texas Instruments’ Eightysomething! - the Newsletter for Users of Graphing Calculators, and he chaired the editorial panel of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ ON-Math: the Online Journal of School Mathematics. When he’s not grading papers or picking through his brussels sprouts, Mahoney is fulfilling his membership duties with the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics.
